Mesothelioma and Asbestos:The link between Asbestos and mesothelioma has been established in many medical tests and studies. Because Asbestos and Mesothelioma are both from the same mineral fibers that are inhaled, they both are often interchanged when discussed with a doctor or lawyer. This article will highlight the relationship of asbestos and mesothelioma.
Asbestos is a mineral which occurs naturally in the environment. However, it is only when it is extracted from the earth and processed into products that it becomes a hazard to peoples health. In the case of Mesothelioma, the fibers are broken at their weakest molecular link and break off into the air. With each break, the asbestos becomes lighter and smaller. It eventually becomes so small that it is inhaled and not just into the lungs. Because of the size of these Asbestos fibers, they move into their the lining of the lungs and other organs, often malignantly moving through the body causing Pleural Mesothelioma in most cases.
Too often, the effects of asbestos and mesothelioma are felt after it has spread. In those cases, the prognosis is often grim. Once a patient has realized the symptoms of inhaling asbestos, the damage has often been done. Sadly, this link between mesothelioma and asbestos was ignored until the mid 1970's. At that point, the product was banned as a construction and clothing material.
The exposure did not end, unfortunately, when it was pulled from the market. The demolition of buildings and renovations of homes that once had asbestos in the ceiling tiles and other places then was spread to a new generation of workers. Years later, there are problems cropping up still from exposure.
While the implications of what has happened from exposure to this deadly mineral are reverberating through the court system, thousands of people with mesothelioma are being lost in the legal system. They have no idea that their cancer is something their family can be compensated for with a mesothelioma lawsuit, hopefully alleviating the finacial burden of their illness.
